Restaurant Versus is an independent project run from London. These terms are an agreement between you and whoever runs it. Nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

Results are the outcome of a public vote. An opinion poll, not an inspection or a review. A restaurant winning means more people voted for it than the other one on the day. It is not a statement of fact about food quality, hygiene or safety, and shouldn't be read as one.

One vote per person per matchup. Please don't:

• Create multiple accounts, or clear cookies, to vote more than once.
• Use scripts or bots.
• Pay for votes, or offer anything in exchange for them.

We remove votes we believe are fake, and may exclude an entrant whose votes have been manipulated. Restaurants asking their own customers to vote is entirely fine. That's the point.

Anyone can nominate a restaurant. Nominating one doesn't put it in a bracket: we choose the line-up from the most-nominated places and ask each one first. Only those who agree take part.

Don't submit anything abusive, or the name of somewhere that isn't a real food business. We remove submissions that break this.

Listings come from open public data. You can ask to be removed from the directory, to decline an invitation to a bracket, or to withdraw from one that's running. Email hello@restaurantversus.com and we'll sort it. We don't charge to be listed, to take part, or to win, and no payment will ever change a result.

You're responsible for keeping your password to yourself. Tell us if you think someone else is using your account. We may suspend accounts used to break these terms.

This is a small independent project. It may be unavailable at times, contain mistakes, or change. Restaurant details come from third-party open data and may be out of date. Check with the restaurant before travelling.

When you nominate a place or cast a vote, you give us permission to show that nomination and count that vote on the site. That is the whole point of submitting it. Don't submit anything you don't have the right to submit.

There is no prize. Winning a bracket earns a restaurant a place in the results and nothing else, and no money changes hands in either direction at any point.

The news section reports on London restaurant openings, closures, moves and awards. Every story says where the information came from, and links to it where there is something to link to. We report what has already been published elsewhere or announced by the business itself; we do not review restaurants, rate them, or publish claims about hygiene, safety or the quality of anyone's food.

We can still get something wrong: a date, a name, a closure that turns out to be a refurbishment. If we have:

• Email hello@restaurantversus.comwith the article and what's wrong with it.
• We aim to reply within five working days, and to correct a clear factual error as soon as we've checked it.
• Corrections are made on the article itself. If a story was substantially wrong we say so on it rather than editing quietly.
• If you'd rather a story about your business came down while we look into it, say so and we'll unpublish it in the meantime.

Nothing here stops you pursuing a legal remedy, and none of it is intended to. It is simply the fastest route to getting something fixed.

The site is provided as it is. We don't promise it will always be available, accurate or up to date, and we're not liable for anything that follows from relying on it: a restaurant that isn't what you hoped, details that turned out to be stale, or time lost to it being down.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow to be limited.
